Biographical / Historical

Anthropologist Murray Charles Groves was born on 24 August 1926 in Melbourne, Australia, where he completed a degree in History and Literature in 1949. In 1956 he received his PhD from the University of Oxford then joined the staff of the Australian National University. He held several positions at the university before moving on to the University of Singapore.

From 1969 until his retirement in 1988, Groves was the Chair of the Department of Sociology at the University of Hong Kong. He passed away in Australia in 2011.
